The dam began construction in 1915 and was completed sometime in 1924. "The Merrimac Ferry which is Highway 113 and crosses from north of Lodi to Merrimac and was built in 1844 before Wisconsin became a state." Chester Mattson the second settler on the site of the village of Merrimac, obtained charters to provide the service. In 1924, after the creation of Lake Wisconsin, Columbia and Sauk counties took over the ferry and the original "Colsac" was born. On April 6, 1963, the "Colsac II" was open for business as the "free ferry". The trip is a mile and about 10 minutes long. The ferry runs 24 hours a day during the months that the lake is not frozen. A new ferry, "Colsac III" will be completed in the next 2 years. Lake Wisconsin is located between the State Capital of Madison and the Recreational area of Wisconsin Dells, the lake is actually part of the Wisconsin River flowage with about 120 navegation buoys placed there because of the river system, and because there are sand bars, stumps and other hazards to navegation that could pose problems to those not familiar with the lake. 57 miles of gorgeous shorelineLake Wisconsin map location
